Correct Citations Come in Pairs: Parenthetical References added to the text of the work, which leads the reader/editor/professor to the Full Citation of each item quoted, paraphrased or referenced in the students work on the work cited pages.
Parenthetical Reference
Parenthetical Reference = (Name v. Name (Court Date). Italicized. [3.97; D.03]
Examples, (Columbus v. Eriksen, 1492).; (George v. George, 1776).; or (Blue v. Gray , 1864).
In the text:
This case underlines the legal precedence as in Columbus v Eriksen. (1492).
(If the case name is used in the text, in a sentence.)
Or While this principle was upheld in both state and federal courts. (George v George, 1776).

Full Citation
Correct citations allows the reader/editor/professor to trace back the authors steps in the research process.
Elements of citations for basic legal document, include: Case name, volume # & reporter used, first page of case in the reporter and the specific page number to refer to, followed by the year of the decision.
Example:
George v. George 776 U.S. 76, 78 (1776)
a. Case name. George v. George
b. Reporter volume number /location information. 776 U.S. [U.S. = U.S. Reports]
c. First page of Case, page of specific citation. 76, 78
d. Date and/or year of decision. (1776)
Court Decisions: Case name, volume number, and reporter used, first page of case in the reporter and the specific page number to refer to, followed by the year of the decision. In text cite name of the case in italics. [APA 399, BB Rule 10, pg 55].
Court Cases at Trial Level: Case name, volume number, and reporter used, first page of case in the reporter and the specific page number to refer to, followed by the year of the decision. (The Court rendering the decision and the year). [APA D.03, 4. pg 401. BB Rule 10, pg 65].
Federal District Court Opinion, Case name, volume number, and reporter used, first page of case in the reporter and the specific page number to refer to, followed by the year of the decision. [ APA 5. pg. 402 BB Rule 10.4 pg.64.65].
State Court of Appeals, Case name, volume number, and reporter used, first page of case in the reporter and the specific page number to refer to, (followed by State Court of Appeals rendering the decision, and the year). [APA 402 BB Rule 10.4b pg 65.66].
State Supreme Court Case: Case name, volume number, and reporter used, first page of case in the reporter and the specific page number to refer to,(followed by the year of the decision.)

State Statute: Give the official or popular name of the act, year of the act. Then give the source, § and section number of the statute and parentheses give the publication date of the statutory compilation: Note this may be different from the year in the name of the act.
