How do I find information on a book that is not in the CJC Libraries so that I can request an interlibrary loan?
Use the Worldcat database in theFirstSearch search service. It lists the holdings of more than 46,000 libraries worldwide (including the CJC Libraries), representing more than one billion items! You can search by subject, author, title or a number of other parameters. To see how, follow the steps in this part of the Library Skills Online Tutorial Module 1 until you get to the "review" screen.
How do I find out whether or not an item is in the CJC Libraries?
Use the CJC Libraries Online Catalog. To learn how, follow the steps in this part of the Library Skills Online Tutorial Module 1 until you get to the "Library of Texas" screen.
How long does it take to get an item through Interlibrary/Intralibrary Loan?
You should allow 10 to 14 days. It may take less time, but do not count on it. It could even take longer. That is why you should do your research early for your papers, in case you need to use this service. It works best if you have some other sources to start writing your paper with until the interlibrary loaned source comes in.
How long can I keep the items once I get them?
The library that lends the items to CJC Libraries for your use determines how long you can keep them. You will be told how long it is when you check the items out. Sometimes you may be allowed to renew the items, but you must bring them back in time for us to request a renewal for you before they are due back at the lending library. If you keep them until they are overdue, you will owe a fine and it will be too late to request a renewal.
What kinds of resources can I get through interlibrary loan?
Some libraries only lend certain types of items through interlibrary loan, but many types of items are available, including books, journal articles, CDs, DVDs, videocassettes, microfilms, and more. Sometimes the lending library will specify that you must use the item at your library rather than checking it out, such as with a roll of microfilm.
Who do I ask if I have other questions?
As always, contact your reference librarian.
