CJC
Libraries Services

The CJC Libraries service the
information needs of the CJC community in a variety of ways. To find out how you
can make use of any of the services below, click on its name.
- Acquisitions /
Collection Development: The libraries select and acquire a
well-rounded collection of information resources
in many formats from print, to electronic for the use of students, faculty
staff and community members to support the mission of the college.
- Cataloging / Processing: The libraries obtain
or create a very detailed new record to represent each information resource
whether it is a printed journal, a DVD, or an e-book so that these can all
be found through a search in the
online catalog. The physical items also have to be processed so that
they can be found on the shelves and circulated.
- Circulation of Materials: The libraries check
materials out and track their use so that they can be retrieved in a timely
manner for others to use.
- Collection Management: The libraries maintain
the collections in an orderly state so that specific items and items on
specific subjects can be located easily and are in good repair and ready for
use.
- College and Local History Archiving: The Maner
library maintains and continuously develops an archive on CJC and local
history so that information and some artifacts relating to these are
preserved for the present and future generations.
- Copying / Printing: The libraries make
available copiers and free printing from public access computers.
- Copyright Compliance Advisory: The librarians
are available for consultation on many questions of copyright related to
institutional use of copyrighted materials. This is not a legal opinion, but
it is a place to start.
- Distance Education Support: The libraries
provide for the information needs of distance education students in support
of the instruction of those students through maintaining online resources
(such as this web site and
online databases), telephone and email reference
services, and memberships in interlibrary borrowing consortia where
distance students can check out materials at a library closer to them.
-
Interlibrary Loan: The libraries participate in
borrowing and lending agreements with over 45,000 other libraries worldwide
representing total collections of over one billion items in order to obtain
items that CJC could not otherwise afford to hold in its collections. This
means that although the library services budget is limited, library user
access to the world of information (even information that is not available
online) is almost unlimited.
- Internet and
Online Database Access: The libraries select, acquire access to, and
maintain access to online information databases through negotiated license
agreements that must be monitored and renewed annually. They also work with
CJC IT Services to insure that Internet access is available to library
computers and wirelessly in the libraries.
- Library Skills Instruction:
The librarians provide expert instruction both through classes and
one-on-one interactions on general and specific information seeking
strategies for students and faculty.
- Library Tours: The librarians provide tours of
the library facilities upon request to students, faculty, staff, and
visitors.
- Media Services: The
libraries offer and maintain Audio/Visual Equipment for use in classes and
for viewing A/V materials in the library.
- Meeting Rooms: The Maner Library offers use of
the Texas Room for group meetings and a viewing room for the use of library
media materials by classes, small groups, and individuals.
- Public Events, Displays and Exhibits: The Maner
Library exhibits student art each semester and hosts other public events
such as the annual Graduation Reception.
- Reading/Study Space: The libraries offer space
for reading and study and maintain an atmosphere conducive to these
activities.
- Reference: The librarians
offer on-demand and by-appointment reference services in person, by phone,
and by email for any information need.
- Services for Students with Disabilities: The
libraries provide specific computer workstations with special software for
hearing and visually impaired students. The Maner library also has an
adjustable workstation specifically designed for wheelchair access.
- Service Design, Planning, and Evaluation: The
libraries receive suggestions and work with
the library committees and other members of the CJC community to design,
plan and continuously improve upon programs and services. Evaluation of
services is often done though gathering and compiling statistics, conducting
surveys and other means of soliciting user and
potential user input.
- Web Site: The libraries
provide, maintain, and continuously improve upon this web site to aid
student information seeking and literacy in support of the educational
mission of CJC.
